Surah An Nazi'at
Translation by:
Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
-
Wan-nāzi‘āti garqā(n).
By those ˹angels˺ stripping out ˹evil souls˺ harshly,
-
Wan-nāsyiṭāti nasyṭā(n).
and those pulling out ˹good souls˺ gently,
-
Was-sābiḥāti sabḥā(n).
and those gliding ˹through heavens˺ swiftly,
-
Fas-sābiqāti sabqā(n).
and those taking the lead vigorously,
-
Fal-mudabbirāti amrā(n).
and those conducting affairs ˹obediently˺!
-
Yauma tarjufur-rājifah(tu).
˹Consider˺ the Day ˹when˺ the quaking Blast will come to pass,
-
Tatba‘uhar-rādifah(tu).
followed by a second Blast.
-
Qulūbuy yauma'iżiw wājifah(tun).
˹The deniers’˺ hearts on that Day will be trembling ˹in horror˺,
-
Abṣāruhā khāsyi‘ah(tun).
with their eyes downcast.
-
Yaqūlūna a'innā lamardūdūna fil-ḥāfirah(ti).
˹But now˺ they ask ˹mockingly˺, “Will we really be restored to our former state,
-
A'iżā kunnā ‘iẓāman nakhirah(tan).
even after we have been reduced to decayed bones?”
-
Qālū tilka iżan karratun khāsirah(tun).
Adding, “Then such a return would be a ˹total˺ loss ˹for us˺!”
-
Fa innamā hiya zajratuw wāḥidah(tun).
But indeed, it will take only one ˹mighty˺ Blast,
-
Fa iżā hum bis-sāhirah(ti).
and at once they will be above ground.
-
Hal atāka ḥadīṡu mūsā.
Has the story of Moses reached you ˹O Prophet˺?
-
Iż nādāhu rabbuhū bil-wādil-muqaddasi ṭuwā(n).
His Lord called him in the sacred valley of Ṭuwa,
-
Iżhab ilā fir‘auna innahū ṭagā.
˹commanding,˺ “Go to Pharaoh, for he has truly transgressed ˹all bounds˺.
-
Fa qul hal laka ilā an tazakkā.
And say, ‘Would you ˹be willing to˺ purify yourself,
-
Wa ahdiyaka ilā rabbika fa takhsyā.
and let me guide you to your Lord so that you will be in awe ˹of Him˺?’”
-
Fa arāhul-āyatal-kubrā.
Then Moses showed him the great sign,
-
Fa każżaba wa ‘aṣā.
but he denied and disobeyed ˹Allah˺,
-
Ṡumma adbara yas‘ā.
then turned his back, striving ˹against the truth˺.
-
Fa ḥasyara fanādā.
Then he summoned ˹his people˺ and called out,
-
Fa qāla ana rabbukumul-a‘lā.
saying, “I am your lord, the most high!”
-
Fa akhażahullāhu nakālal-ākhirati wal-ūlā.
So Allah overtook him, making him an example in this life and the next.
-
Inna fī żālika la‘ibratal limay yakhsyā.
Surely in this is a lesson for whoever stands in awe of ˹Allah˺.
-
A'antum asyaddu khalqan amis-samā'u banāhā.
Which is harder to create: you or the sky? He built it,
-
Rafa‘a samkahā fa sawwāhā.
raising it high and forming it flawlessly.
-
Wa agṭasya lailahā wa akhraja ḍuḥāhā.
He dimmed its night, and brought forth its daylight.
-
Wal-arḍa ba‘da żālika daḥāhā.
As for the earth, He spread it out as well,
-
Akhraja minhā mā'ahā wa mar‘āhā.
bringing forth its water and pastures
-
Wal-jibāla arsāhā.
and setting the mountains firmly ˹upon it˺—
-
Matā‘al lakum wa li'an‘āmikum.
all as ˹a means of˺ sustenance for you and your animals.
-
Fa iżā jā'atiṭ-ṭāmmatul-kubrā.
But, when the Supreme Disaster comes to pass—
-
Yauma yatażakkarul-insānu mā sa‘ā.
the Day every person will remember all ˹their˺ striving,
-
Wa burrizatil-jaḥīmu limay yarā.
and the Hellfire will be displayed for all to see—
-
Fa ammā man ṭagā.
then as for those who transgressed
-
Wa āṡaral-ḥayātad-dun-yā.
and preferred the ˹fleeting˺ life of this world,
-
Fa innal-jaḥīma hiyal-ma'wā.
the Hellfire will certainly be ˹their˺ home.
-
Wa ammā man khāfa maqāma rabbihī wa nahan-nafsa ‘anil-hawā.
And as for those who were in awe of standing before their Lord and restrained themselves from ˹evil˺ desires,
-
Fa innal-jannata hiyal-ma'wā.
Paradise will certainly be ˹their˺ home.
-
Yas'alūnaka ‘anis-sā‘ati ayyāna mursāhā.
They ask you ˹O Prophet˺ regarding the Hour, “When will it be?”
-
Fīma anta min żikrāhā.
But it is not for you to tell its time.
-
Ilā rabbika muntahāhā.
That knowledge rests with your Lord ˹alone˺.
-
Innamā anta munżiru may yakhsyāhā.
Your duty is only to warn whoever is in awe of it.
-
Ka'annahum yauma yaraunahā lam yalbaṡū illā ‘asyiyyatan au ḍuḥāhā.
On the Day they see it, it will be as if they had stayed ˹in the world˺ no more than one evening or its morning.
