Surah As Saffat

Translation by:
Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

    Waṣ-ṣāffāti ṣaffā(n).

By those ˹angels˺ lined up in ranks,

    Faz-zājirāti zajrā(n).

and those who diligently drive ˹the clouds˺,

    Fat-tāliyāti żikrā(n).

and those who recite the Reminder!

    Inna ilāhakum lawāḥid(un).

    Surely your God is One!

    Rabbus-samāwāti wal-arḍi wa mā bainahumā wa rabbul-masyāriq(i).

˹He is˺ the Lord of the heavens and the earth and everything in between, and the Lord of all points of sunrise.

    Innā zayyannas-samā'ad-dun-yā bizīnatinil-kawākib(i).

Indeed, We have adorned the lowest heaven with the stars for decoration

Wa ḥifẓam min kulli syaiṭānim mārid(in).

and ˹for˺ protection from every rebellious devil.

Lā yassammā‘ūna ilal-mala'il-a‘lā wa yuqżafūna min kulli jānib(in).

They cannot listen to the highest assembly ˹of angels˺ for they are pelted from every side,

    Duḥūraw wa lahum ‘ażābuw wāṣib(un).

˹fiercely˺ driven away. And they will suffer an everlasting torment.

    Illā man khaṭifal-khaṭfata fa'atba‘ahū syihābun ṡāqib(un).

But whoever manages to stealthily eavesdrop is ˹instantly˺ pursued by a piercing flare.

Fastaftihim ahum asyaddu khalqan am man khalaqnā, innā khalaqnāhum min ṭīnil lāzib(in).

So ask them ˹O Prophet˺, which is harder to create: them or other marvels of Our creation? Indeed, We created them from a sticky clay.

    Bal ‘ajibta wa yaskharūn(a).

In fact, you are astonished ˹by their denial˺, while they ridicule ˹you˺.

    Wa iżā żukkirū lā yażkurūn(a).

When they are reminded, they are never mindful.

    Wa iżā ra'au āyatay yastaskhirūn(a).

And whenever they see a sign, they make fun of it,

Wa qālū in hāżā illā siḥrum mubīn(un).

saying, “This is nothing but pure magic.

A'iżā mitnā wa kunnā turābaw wa ‘iẓāman a'innā lamab‘ūṡūn(a).

When we are dead and reduced to dust and bones, will we really be resurrected?

    Awa ābā'unal-awwalūn(a).

    And our forefathers as well?”

    Qul na‘am wa antum dākhirūn(a).

Say, “Yes! And you will be fully humbled.”

    Fa'innamā hiya zajratuw wāḥidatun fa'iżā hum yanẓurūn(a).

It will only take one Blast, then at once they will see ˹it all˺.

Wa qālū yā wailanā hāżā yaumud-dīn(i).

They will cry, “Oh, woe to us! This is the Day of Judgment!”

    Hāżā yaumul-faṣlil-lażī kuntum bihī tukażżibūn(a).

˹They will be told,˺ “This is the Day of ˹Final˺ Decision which you used to deny.”

˹Allah will say to the angels,˺ “Gather ˹all˺ the wrongdoers along with their peers, and whatever they used to worship

    Min dūnillāhi fahdūhum ilā ṣirāṭil-jaḥīm(i).

instead of Allah, then lead them ˹all˺ to the path of Hell.

    Waqifūhum innahum mas'ūlūn(a).

And detain them, for they must be questioned.”

    Mā lakum lā tanāṣarūn(a).

˹Then they will be asked,˺ “What is the matter with you that you can no longer help each other?”

    Bal humul-yauma mustaslimūn(a).

In fact, on that Day they will be ˹fully˺ submissive.

    Wa aqbala ba‘ḍuhum ‘alā ba‘ḍiy yatasā'alūn(a).

They will turn on each other, throwing blame.

    Qālū innakum kuntum ta'tūnanā ‘anil-yamīn(i).

The misled will say, “It was you who deluded us away from what is right.”

    Qālū bal lam takūnū mu'minīn(a).

The misleaders will reply, “No! You disbelieved on your own.

Wa mā kāna lanā ‘alaikum min sulṭān(in), bal kuntum qauman ṭāgīn(a).

We had no authority over you. In fact, you yourselves were a transgressing people.

Fa ḥaqqa ‘alainā qaulu rabbinā, innā lażā'iqūn(a).

The decree of our Lord has come to pass against us ˹all˺: we will certainly taste ˹the punishment˺.

    Fa agwainākum innā kunnā gāwīn(a).

We caused you to deviate, for we ourselves were deviant.”

    Fa innahum yauma'iżin fil-‘ażābi musytarikūn(a).

Surely on that Day they will ˹all˺ share in the punishment.

    Innā każālika naf‘alu bil-mujrimīn(a).

That is certainly how We deal with the wicked.

Innahum kānū iżā qīla lahum lā ilāha illallāhu yastakbirūn(a).

For whenever it was said to them ˹in the world˺, “There is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Allah,” they acted arrogantly

    Wa yaqūlūna a'innā latārikū ālihatinā lisyā‘irim majnūn(in).

and argued, “Should we really abandon our gods for a mad poet?”

    Bal jā'a bil-ḥaqqi wa ṣaddaqal-mursalīn(a).

In fact, he came with the truth, confirming ˹earlier˺ messengers.

    Innakum lażā'iqul-‘ażābil-alīm(i).

You will certainly taste the painful torment,

Wa mā tujzauna illā mā kuntum ta‘malūn(a).

and will only be rewarded for what you used to do.

    Illā ‘ibādallāhil-mukhlaṣīn(a).

But not the chosen servants of Allah.

    Ulā'ika lahum rizqum ma‘lūm(un).

They will have a known provision:

    Fawākihu wa hum mukramūn(a).

fruits ˹of every type˺. And they will be honoured

    Fī jannātin na‘īm(i).

    in the Gardens of Bliss,

    ‘Alā sururim mutaqābilīn(a).

    facing each other on thrones.

    Yuṭāfu ‘alaihim bika'sim mim ma‘īn(in).

A drink ˹of pure wine˺ will be passed around to them from a flowing stream:

    Baiḍā'a lażżatil lisy-syāribīn(a).

    crystal-white, delicious to drink.

Lā fīhā gauluw wa lā hum ‘anhā yunzafūn(a).

It will neither harm ˹them˺, nor will they be intoxicated by it.

    Wa ‘indahum qāṣirātuṭ-ṭarfi ‘īn(un).

And with them will be maidens of modest gaze and gorgeous eyes,

    Ka'annahum baiḍum maknūn(un).

as if they were pristine pearls.

    Fa'aqbala ba‘ḍuhum ‘alā ba‘ḍiy yatasā'alūn(a).

Then they will turn to one another inquisitively.

Qāla qā'ilum minhum innī kāna lī qarīn(un).

One of them will say, “I once had a companion ˹in the world˺

    Yaqūlu a'innaka laminal-muṣaddiqīn(a).

who used to ask ˹me˺, ‘Do you actually believe ˹in resurrection˺?

    A'iżā mitnā wa kunnā turāban a'innā lamadīnūn(a).

When we are dead and reduced to dust and bones, will we really be brought to judgment?’”

    Qāla hal antum muṭṭali‘ūn(a).

He will ˹then˺ ask, “Would you care to see ˹his fate˺?”

    Faṭṭala‘a fa ra'āhu fī sawā'il-jaḥīm(i).

Then he ˹and the others˺ will look and spot him in the midst of the Hellfire.

    Qāla tallāhi in kitta laturdīn(i).

He will ˹then˺ say, “By Allah! You nearly ruined me.

Wa lau lā ni‘matu rabbī lakuntu minal-muḥḍarīn(a).

Had it not been for the grace of my Lord, I ˹too˺ would have certainly been among those brought ˹to Hell˺.”

    Afamā naḥnu bimayyitīn(a).

˹Then he will ask his fellow believers,˺ “Can you imagine that we will never die,

Illā mautatunal-ūlā wa mā naḥnu bimu‘ażżabīn(a).

except our first death, nor be punished ˹like the others˺?”

    Inna hāżā lahuwal-fauzul-‘aẓīm(u).

This is truly the ultimate triumph.

    Limiṡli hāżā falya‘malil-‘āmilūn(a).

For such ˹honour˺ all should strive.

    Ażālika khairun nuzulan am syajaratuz-zaqqūm(i).

Is this ˹bliss˺ a better accommodation or the tree of Zaqqûm?

    Innā ja‘alnāhā fitnatal liẓ-ẓālimīn(a).

We have surely made it a test for the wrongdoers.

    Innahā syajaratun takhruju fī aṣlil-jaḥīm(i).

Indeed, it is a tree that grows in the depths of Hell,

    Tal‘uhā ka'annahū ru'ūsusy-syayāṭīn(i).

    bearing fruit like devils’ heads.

    Fa innahum la'ākilūna minhā fa māli'ūna minhal-buṭūn(a).

The evildoers will certainly ˹be left to˺ eat from it, filling up their bellies with it.

Ṡumma inna lahum ‘alaihā lasyaubam min ḥamīm(in).

Then on top of that they will be given a blend of boiling drink.

    Ṡumma inna marji‘ahum la'ilal-jaḥīm(i).

Then they will ultimately return to ˹their place in˺ Hell.

    Innahum alfau ābā'ahum ḍāllīn(a).

Indeed, they found their forefathers astray,

    Fahum ‘alā āṡārihim yuhra‘ūn(a).

so they rushed in their footsteps!

    Wa laqad ḍalla qablahum akṡarul-awwalīn(a).

And surely most of the earlier generations had strayed before them,

    Wa laqad arsalnā fīhim munżirīn(a).

although We had certainly sent warners among them.

    Fanẓur kaifa kāna ‘āqibatul-munżarīn(a).

See then what was the end of those who had been warned.

    Illā ‘ibādallāhil-mukhlaṣīn(a).

But not the chosen servants of Allah.

    Wa laqad nādānā nūḥun falani‘mal-mujībūn(a).

Indeed, Noah cried out to Us, and how excellent are We in responding!

    Wa najjaināhu wa ahlahū minal-karbil-‘aẓīm(i).

We delivered him and his family from the great distress,

    Wa ja‘alnā żurriyyatahū humul-bāqīn(a).

and made his descendants the sole survivors.

    Wa taraknā ‘alaihi fil-ākhirīn(a).

And We blessed him ˹with honourable mention˺ among later generations:

    Salāmun ‘alā nūḥin fil-‘ālamīn(a).

“Peace be upon Noah among all peoples.”

    Innā każālika najzil-muḥsinīn(a).

Indeed, this is how We reward the good-doers.

    Innahū min ‘ibādinal-mu'minīn(a).

˹For˺ he was truly one of Our faithful servants.

    Ṡumma agraqnal-ākharīn(a).

    Then We drowned the others.

    Wa inna min syī‘atihī la'ibrāhīm(a).

And indeed, one of those who followed his way was Abraham.

    Iż jā'a rabbahū biqalbin salīm(in).

˹Remember˺ when he came to his Lord with a pure heart,

Iż qāla li'abīhi wa qaumihī māżā ta‘budūn(a).

and said to his father and his people, “What are you worshipping?

    A'ifkan ālihatan dūnallāhi turīdūn(a).

Is it false gods that you desire instead of Allah?

    Famā ẓannukum birabbil-‘ālamīn(a).

What then do you expect from the Lord of all worlds?”

    Fa naẓara naẓratan fin-nujūm(i).

He later looked up to the stars ˹in contemplation˺,

    Fa qāla innī saqīm(un).

then said, “I am really sick.”

    Fa tawallau ‘anhu mudbirīn(a).

So they turned their backs on him and went away.

Farāga ilā ālihatihim faqāla alā ta'kulūn(a).

Then he ˹stealthily˺ advanced towards their gods, and said ˹mockingly˺, “Will you not eat ˹your offerings˺?

    Mā lakum lā tanṭiqūn(a).

What is wrong with you that you cannot speak?”

    Farāga ‘alaihim ḍarbam bil-yamīn(i).

Then he swiftly turned on them, striking ˹them˺ with his right hand.

    Fa aqbalū ilaihi yaziffūn(a).

Later, his people came rushing towards him ˹furiously˺.

    Qāla ata‘budūna mā tanḥitūn(a).

He argued, “How can you worship what you carve ˹with your own hands˺,

    Wallāhu khalaqakum wa mā ta‘malūn(a).

when it is Allah Who created you and whatever you do?”

    Qālubnū lahū bun-yānan fa'alqūhu fil-jaḥīm(i).

They said ˹to one another˺, “Build him a furnace and cast him into the blazing fire.”

    Fa arādū bihī kaidan faja‘alnāhumul-asfalīn(a).

And so they sought to harm him, but We made them inferior.

Wa qāla innī żāhibun ilā rabbī sayahdīn(i).

He later said, “I am leaving ˹in obedience˺ to my Lord. He will guide me.

    Rabbi hab lī minaṣ-ṣāliḥīn(a).

My Lord! Bless me with righteous offspring.”

    Fa basysyarnāhu bigulāmin ḥalīm(in).

So We gave him good news of a forbearing son.

Falammā balaga ma‘ahus-sa‘ya qāla yā bunayya innī arā fil-manāmi annī ażbaḥuka fanẓur māżā tarā, qāla yā abatif‘al mā tu'mar(u), satajidunī in syā'allāhu minaṣ-ṣābirīn(a).

Then when the boy reached the age to work with him, Abraham said, “O my dear son! I have seen in a dream that I ˹must˺ sacrifice you. So tell me what you think.” He replied, “O my dear father! Do as you are commanded. Allah willing, you will find me steadfast.”

    Falammā aslamā wa tallahū lil-jabīn(i).

Then when they submitted ˹to Allah’s Will˺, and Abraham laid him on his forehead ˹for sacrifice˺,

    Wa nādaināhu ay yā ibrāhīm(u).

We called out to him, “O Abraham!

    Qad ṣaddaqtar-ru'yā, innā każālika najzil-muḥsinīn(a).

You have already fulfilled the vision.” Indeed, this is how We reward the good-doers.

    Inna hāżā lahuwal-balā'ul-mubīn(u).

That was truly a revealing test.

    Wa fadaināhu biżibḥin ‘aẓīm(in).

And We ransomed his son with a great sacrifice,

    Wa taraknā ‘alaihi fil-ākhirīn(a).

and blessed Abraham ˹with honourable mention˺ among later generations:

    Salāmun ‘alā ibrāhīm(a).

    “Peace be upon Abraham.”

    Każālika najzil-muḥsinīn(a).

This is how We reward the good-doers.

    Innahū min ‘ibādinal-mu'minīn(a).

He was truly one of Our faithful servants.

    Wa basysyarnāhu bi'isḥāqa nabiyyam minaṣ-ṣāliḥīn(a).

We ˹later˺ gave him good news of Isaac—a prophet, and one of the righteous.

Wa bāraknā ‘alaihi wa ‘alā isḥāq(a), wa min żurriyyatihimā muḥsinuw wa ẓālimul linafsihī mubīn(un).

We blessed him and Isaac as well. Some of their descendants did good, while others clearly wronged themselves.

Wa laqad manannā ‘alā mūsā wa hārūn(a).

And We certainly showed favour to Moses and Aaron,

    Wa najjaināhumā wa qaumahumā minal-karbil-‘aẓīm(i).

and delivered them and their people from the great distress.

    Wa naṣarnāhum fakānū humul-gālibīn(a).

We helped them so it was they who prevailed.

    Wa ātaināhumal-kitābal-mustabīn(a).

We gave them the clear Scripture,

    Wa hadaināhumaṣ-ṣirāṭal-mustaqīm(a).

and guided them to the Straight Path.

    Wa taraknā ‘alaihimā fil-ākhirīn(a).

And We blessed them ˹with honourable mention˺ among later generations:

    Salāmun ‘alā mūsā wa hārūn(a).

“Peace be upon Moses and Aaron.”

    Innā każālika najzil-muḥsinīn(a).

Indeed, this is how We reward the good-doers.

    Innahumā min ‘ibādinal-mu'minīn(a).

They were truly ˹two˺ of Our faithful servants.

    Wa inna ilyāsa laminal-mursalīn(a).

And Elias was indeed one of the messengers.

    Iż qāla liqaumihī alā tattaqūn(a).

˹Remember˺ when he said to his people, “Will you not fear ˹Allah˺?

    Atad‘ūna ba‘law wa tażarūna aḥsanal-khāliqīn(a).

Do you call upon ˹the idol of˺ Ba’l and abandon the Best of Creators—

    Allāha rabbakum wa rabba ābā'ikumul-awwalīn(a).

Allah, your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers?”

    Fakażżabūhu fa'innahum lamuḥḍarūn(a).

But they rejected him, so they will certainly be brought ˹for punishment˺.

    Illā ‘ibādallāhil-mukhlaṣīn(a).

But not the chosen servants of Allah.

    Wa taraknā ‘alaihi fil-ākhirīn(a).

We blessed him ˹with honourable mention˺ among later generations:

    Salāmun ‘alā ilyāsīn(a).

    “Peace be upon Elias.”

    Innā każālika najzil-muḥsinīn(a).

Indeed, this is how We reward the good-doers.

    Innahū min ‘ibādinal-mu'minīn(a).

He was truly one of Our faithful servants.

    Wa inna lūṭal laminal-mursalīn(a).

And Lot was indeed one of the messengers.

    Iż najjaināhu wa ahlahū ajma‘īn(a).

˹Remember˺ when We delivered him and all of his family,

    Illā ‘ajūzan fil-gābirīn(a).

except an old woman, who was one of the doomed.

    Ṡumma dammarnal-ākharīn(a).

Then We ˹utterly˺ destroyed the rest.

    Wa innakum latamurrūna ‘alaihim muṣbiḥīn(a).

You ˹Meccans˺ certainly pass by their ruins day

    Wa bil-lail(i), afalā ta‘qilūn(a).

and night. Will you not then understand?

    Wa inna yūnusa laminal-mursalīn(a).

And Jonah was indeed one of the messengers.

    Iż abaqa ilal-fulkil-masyḥūn(i).

˹Remember˺ when he fled to the overloaded ship.

    Fa sāhama fakāna minal-mudḥaḍīn(a).

Then ˹to save it from sinking,˺ he drew straws ˹with other passengers˺. He lost ˹and was thrown overboard˺.

    Faltaqamahul-ḥūtu wa huwa mulīm(un).

Then the whale swallowed him up while he was blameworthy.

    Falau lā annahū kāna minal-musabbiḥīn(a).

Had he not ˹constantly˺ glorified ˹Allah˺,

Lalabiṡa fī baṭnihī ilā yaumi yub‘aṡūn(a).

he would have certainly remained in its belly until the Day of Resurrection.

Fa nabażnāhu bil-‘arā'i wa huwa saqīm(un).

But We cast him onto the open ˹shore˺, ˹totally˺ worn out,

Wa ambatnā ‘alaihi syajaratam miy yaqṭīn(in).

and caused a squash plant to grow over him.

Wa arsalnāhu ilā mi'ati alfin au yazīdūn(a).

We ˹later˺ sent him ˹back˺ to ˹his city of˺ one hundred thousand people or more,

    Fa'āmanū famatta‘nāhum ilā ḥīn(in).

who then believed ˹in him˺, so We allowed them enjoyment for a while.

    Fastaftihim alirabbikal-banātu wa lahumul-banūn(a).

Ask them ˹O Prophet˺ if your Lord has daughters, while the pagans ˹prefer to˺ have sons.

Am khalaqnal-malā'ikata ināṡaw wa hum syāhidūn(a).

Or ˹ask them˺ if We created the angels as females right before their eyes.

    Alā innahum min ifkihim layaqūlūn(a).

Indeed, it is one of their ˹outrageous˺ fabrications to say,

    Waladallāh(u), wa innahum lakāżibūn(a).

“Allah has children.” They are simply liars.

    Aṣṭafal-banāti ‘alal-banīn(a).

Has He chosen daughters over sons?

    Mā lakum, kaifa taḥkumūn(a).

What is the matter with you? How do you judge?

    Afalā tażakkarūn(a).

Will you not then be mindful?

    Am lakum sulṭānum mubīn(un).

Or do you have ˹any˺ compelling proof?

    Fa'tū bikitābikum in kuntum ṣādiqīn(a).

Then bring ˹us˺ your scripture, if what you say is true!

    Wa ja‘alū bainahū wa bainal-jinnati nasabā(n), wa laqad ‘alimatil-jinnatu innahum lamuḥḍarūn(a).

They have also established a ˹marital˺ relationship between Him and the jinn. Yet the jinn ˹themselves˺ know well that such people will certainly be brought ˹for punishment˺.

    Subḥānallāhi ‘ammā yaṣifūn(a).

Glorified is Allah far above what they claim!

    Illā ‘ibādallāhil-mukhlaṣīn(a).

But not the chosen servants of Allah.

    Fa'innakum wa mā ta‘budūn(a).

Surely you ˹pagans˺ and whatever ˹idols˺ you worship

    Mā antum ‘alaihi bifātinīn(a).

can never lure ˹anyone˺ away from Him

    Illā man huwa ṣālil-jaḥīm(i).

except those ˹destined˺ to burn in Hell.

˹The angels respond,˺ “There is not one of us without an assigned station ˹of worship˺.

    Wa innā lanaḥnuṣ-ṣāffūn(a).

We are indeed the ones lined up in ranks ˹for Allah˺.

    Wa innā lanaḥnul-musabbiḥūn(a).

And we are indeed the ones ˹constantly˺ glorifying ˹His praise˺.”

    Wa in kānū layaqūlūn(a).

    They certainly used to say,

    Lau anna ‘indanā żikram minal-awwalīn(a).

“If only we had a Reminder like ˹those of˺ earlier peoples,

    Lakunnā ‘ibādallāhil-mukhlaṣīn(a).

we would have truly been Allah’s devoted servants.”

    Fa kafarū bih(ī), fasaufa ya‘lamūn(a).

But ˹now˺ they reject it, so they will soon know.

    Wa laqad sabaqat kalimatunā li‘ibādinal-mursalīn(a).

Our Word has already gone forth to Our servants, the messengers,

    Innahum lahumul-manṣūrūn(a).

that they would surely be helped,

    Wa inna jundanā lahumul-gālibūn(a).

and that Our forces will certainly prevail.

    Fatawalla ‘anhum ḥattā ḥīn(in).

So turn away from the deniers for a while ˹O Prophet˺.

    Wa abṣirhum, fa saufa yubṣirūn(a).

You will see ˹what will happen to˺ them, and they too will see!

    Afabi‘ażābinā yasta‘jilūn(a).

Do they ˹really˺ wish to hasten Our punishment?

Fa iżā nazala bisāḥatihim fa sā'a ṣabāḥul-munżarīn(a).

Yet when it descends upon them: how evil will that morning be for those who had been warned!

    Wa tawalla ‘anhum ḥattā ḥīn(in).

And turn away from them for a while.

    Wa abṣir, fasaufa yubṣirūn(a).

You will see, and they too will see!

    Subḥāna rabbika rabbil-‘izzati ‘ammā yaṣifūn(a).

Glorified is your Lord—the Lord of Honour and Power—above what they claim!

    Wa salāmun ‘alal-mursalīn(a).

    Peace be upon the messengers.

    Wal-ḥamdu lillāhi rabbil-‘ālamīn(a).

And praise be to Allah—Lord of all worlds.
