Surah Ash Shu'ara

Translation by:
Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

    Tā Sīm Mīm.

    Ṭâ-Sĩn-Mĩm.

    Tilka āyātul-kitābil-mubīn(i).

These are the verses of the clear Book.

Perhaps you ˹O Prophet˺ will grieve yourself to death over their disbelief.

In nasya' nunazzil ‘alaihim minas-samā'i āyatan fa ẓallat a‘nāquhum lahā khāḍi‘īn(a).

If We willed, We could send down upon them a ˹compelling˺ sign from the heavens, leaving their necks bent in ˹utter˺ submission to it.

Wa mā ya'tīhim min żikrim minar-raḥmāni muḥdaṡin illā kānū ‘anhu mu‘riḍīn(a).

Whatever new reminder comes to them from the Most Compassionate, they always turn away from it.

Faqad każżabū fa saya'tīhim ambā'u mā kānū bihī yastahzi'ūn(a).

They have certainly denied ˹the truth˺, so they will soon face the consequences of their ridicule.

Awalam yarau ilal-arḍi kam ambatnā fīhā min kulli zaujin karīm(in).

Have they failed to look at the earth, ˹to see˺ how many types of fine plants We have caused to grow in it?

Inna fī żālika la'āyah(tan), wa mā kāna akṡaruhum mu'minīn(a).

Surely in this is a sign. Yet most of them would not believe.

    Inna rabbaka lahuwal-‘azīzur-raḥīm(u).

And your Lord is certainly the Almighty, Most Merciful.

Wa iż nādā rabbuka mūsā ani'til-qaumaẓ-ẓālimīn(a).

˹Remember˺ when your Lord called out to Moses, “Go to the wrongdoing people—

    Qauma fir‘aun(a), alā yattaqūn(a).

the people of Pharaoh. Will they not fear ˹Allah˺?”

Qāla rabbi innī akhāfu ay yukażżibūn(i).

He replied, “My Lord! I fear that they will reject me.

Wa yaḍīqu ṣadrī wa lā yanṭaliqu lisānī fa arsil ilā hārūn(a).

And ˹so˺ my heart will be broken and my tongue will be tied. So send Aaron along ˹as a messenger˺.

Wa lahum ‘alayya żambun fa akhāfu ay yaqtulūn(i).

Also, they have a charge against me, so I fear they may kill me.”

    Qāla kallā, fażhabā bi'āyātinā innā ma‘akum mustami‘ūn(a).

Allah responded, “Certainly not! So go, both of you, with Our signs. We will be with you, listening.

    Fa'tiyā fir‘auna faqūlā innā rasūlu rabbil-‘ālamīn(a).

Go to Pharaoh and say, ‘We are messengers from the Lord of all worlds,

    An arsil ma‘anā banī isrā'īl(a).

˹commanded to say:˺ ‘Let the Children of Israel go with us.’’”

Qāla alam nurabbika fīnā walīdaw wa labiṡta fīnā min ‘umurika sinīn(a).

Pharaoh protested, “Did we not raise you among us as a child, and you stayed several years of your life in our care?

    Wa fa‘alta fa‘latakal-latī fa‘alta wa anta minal-kāfirīn(a).

Then you did what you did, being ˹utterly˺ ungrateful!”

Qāla fa‘altuhā iżaw wa ana minaḍ-ḍāllīn(a).

Moses replied, “I did it then, lacking guidance.

Fa farartu minkum lammā khiftukum fa wahaba lī rabbī ḥukmaw wa ja‘alanī minal-mursalīn(a).

So I fled from you when I feared you. Then my Lord granted me wisdom and made me one of the messengers.

Wa tilka ni‘matun tamunnuhā ‘alayya an ‘abbatta banī isrā'īl(a).

How can that be a ‘favour,’ of which you remind me, when ˹it was only because˺ you ˹have˺ enslaved the Children of Israel?”

    Qāla fir‘aunu wa mā rabbul-‘ālamīn(a).

Pharaoh asked, “And what is ‘the Lord of all worlds’?”

Qāla rabbus-samāwāti wal-arḍi wa mā bainahumā, in kuntum mūqinīn(a).

Moses replied, “˹He is˺ the Lord of the heavens and the earth and everything in between, if only you had sure faith.”

    Qāla liman ḥaulahū alā tastami‘ūn(a).

Pharaoh said to those around him, “Did you hear ˹what he said˺?”

    Qāla rabbukum wa rabbu ābā'ikumul-awwalīn(a).

Moses added, “˹He is˺ your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers.”

Qāla inna rasūlakumul-lażī ursila ilaikum lamajnūn(un).

Pharaoh said ˹mockingly˺, “Your messenger, who has been sent to you, must be insane.”

Qāla rabbul-masyriqi wal-magribi wa mā bainahumā, in kuntum ta‘qilūn(a).

Moses responded: “˹He is˺ the Lord of the east and west, and everything in between, if only you had any sense.”

    Qāla la'inittakhażta ilāhan gairī la'aj‘alannaka minal-masjūnīn(a).

Pharaoh threatened, “If you take any other god besides me, I will certainly have you imprisoned.”

    Qāla awalau ji'tuka bisyai'im mubīn(in).

Moses responded, “Even if I bring you a clear proof?”

Qāla fa'ti bihī in kunta minaṣ-ṣādiqīn(a).

Pharaoh demanded, “Bring it then, if what you say is true.”

Fa alqā ‘aṣāhu fa iżā hiya ṡu‘bānum mubīn(un).

So he threw down his staff and—behold!—it became a real snake.

Wa naza‘a yadahū fa iżā hiya baiḍā'u lin-nāẓirīn(a).

Then he drew his hand ˹out of his collar˺ and it was ˹shining˺ white for all to see.

Qāla lil-mala'i ḥaulahū inna hāżā lasāḥirun ‘alīm(un).

Pharaoh said to the chiefs around him, “He is indeed a skilled magician,

Yurīdu ay yukhrijakum min arḍikum bisiḥrih(ī), fa māżā ta'murūn(a).

who seeks to drive you from your land by his magic. So what do you propose?”

    Qālū arjih wa akhāhu wab‘aṡ fil-madā'ini ḥāsyirīn(a).

They replied, “Let him and his brother wait and dispatch mobilizers to all cities

    Ya'tūka bikulli saḥḥārin ‘alīm(in).

to bring you every skilled magician.”

    Fa jumi‘as-saḥaratu limīqāti yaumim ma‘lūm(in).

So the magicians were assembled at the set time on the appointed day.

Wa qīla lin-nāsi hal antum mujtami‘ūn(a).

And the people were asked, “Will you join the gathering,

    La‘allanā nattabi‘us-saḥarata in kānū humul-gālibīn(a).

so that we may follow the magicians if they prevail?”

    Falammā jā'as-saḥaratu qālū lifir‘auna a'inna lanā la'ajran in kunnā naḥnul-gālibīn(a).

When the magicians came, they asked Pharaoh, “Shall we have a ˹suitable˺ reward if we prevail?”

Qāla na‘am wa innakum iżal laminal-muqarrabīn(a).

He replied, “Yes, and you will then certainly be among those closest to me.”

Qāla lahum mūsā alqū mā antum mulqūn(a).

Moses said to them, “Cast whatever you wish to cast.”

Fa alqau ḥibālahum wa ‘iṣiyyahum wa qālū bi‘izzati fir‘auna innā lanaḥnul-gālibūn(a).

So they cast down their ropes and staffs, saying, “By Pharaoh’s might, it is we who will surely prevail.”

Fa alqā mūsā ‘aṣāhu fa iżā hiya talqafu mā ya'fikūn(a).

Then Moses threw down his staff, and—behold!—it devoured the objects of their illusion!

    Fa ulqiyas-saḥaratu sājidīn(a).

So the magicians fell down, prostrating.

    Qālū āmannā birabbil-‘ālamīn(a).

They declared, “We ˹now˺ believe in the Lord of all worlds—

    Rabbi mūsā wa hārūn(a).

the Lord of Moses and Aaron.”

Qāla āmantum lahū qabla an āżana lakum, innahū lakabīrukumul-lażī ‘allamakumus-siḥr(a), fa lasaufa ta‘lamūn(a), la'uqaṭṭi‘anna aidiyakum wa arjulakum min khilāfiw wa la'uṣallibannakum ajma'īn(a).

Pharaoh threatened, “How dare you believe in him before I give you permission? He must be your master who taught you magic, but soon you will see. I will certainly cut off your hands and feet on opposite sides, then crucify you all.”

Qālū lā ḍair(a), innā ilā rabbinā munqalibūn(a).

They responded, “˹That would be˺ no harm! Surely to our Lord we will ˹all˺ return.

Innā naṭma‘u ay yagfira lanā rabbunā khaṭāyānā an kunnā awwalal-mu'minīn(a).

We really hope that our Lord will forgive our sins, as we are the first to believe.”

Wa auḥainā ilā mūsā an asri bi‘ibādī innakum muttaba‘ūn(a).

And We inspired Moses, ˹saying,˺ “Leave with My servants at night, for you will surely be pursued.”

    Fa arsala fir‘aunu fil-madā'ini ḥāsyirīn(a).

Then Pharaoh sent mobilizers to all cities,

    Inna hā'ulā'i lasyirzimatun qalīlūn(a).

˹and said,˺ “These ˹outcasts˺ are just a handful of people,

    Wa innahum lanā lagā'iẓūn(a).

    who have really enraged us,

    Wa innā lajamī‘un ḥāżirūn(a).

but we are all on the alert.”

Fa akhrajnāhum min jannātiw wa ‘uyūn(in).

So We lured the tyrants out of ˹their˺ gardens, springs,

    Wa kunūziw wa maqāmin karīm(in).

    treasures, and splendid residences.

    Każālik(a), wa auraṡnāhā banī isrā'īl(a).

So it was. And We awarded it ˹all˺ to the Children of Israel.

    Fa atba‘ūhum musyriqīn(a).

And so they pursued them at sunrise.

Falammā tarā'al-jam‘āni qāla aṣḥābu mūsā innā lamudrakūn(a).

When the two groups came face to face, the companions of Moses cried out, “We are overtaken for sure.”

Qāla kallā, inna ma‘iya rabbī sayahdīn(i).

Moses reassured ˹them˺, “Absolutely not! My Lord is certainly with me—He will guide me.”

Fa auḥainā ilā mūsā aniḍrib bi‘aṣākal-baḥr(a), fanfalaqa fa kāna kullu firqin kaṭ-ṭaudil ‘aẓīm(i).

So We inspired Moses: “Strike the sea with your staff,” and the sea was split, each part was like a huge mountain.

    Wa azlafnā ṡammal-ākharīn(a).

We drew the pursuers to that place,

Wa anjainā mūsā wa mam ma‘ahū ajma‘īn(a).

and delivered Moses and those with him all together.

    Ṡumma agraqnal-ākharīn(a).

    Then We drowned the others.

Inna fī żālika la'āyah(tan), wa mā kāna akṡaruhum mu'minīn(a).

Surely in this is a sign. Yet most of them would not believe.

    Wa inna rabbaka lahuwal-‘azīzur-raḥīm(u).

And your Lord is certainly the Almighty, Most Merciful.

    Watlu ‘alaihim naba'a ibrāhīm(a).

Relate to them ˹O Prophet˺ the story of Abraham,

Iż qāla li'abīhi wa qaumihī mā ta‘budūn(a).

when he questioned his father and his people, “What is that you worship ˹besides Allah˺?”

Qālū na‘budu aṣnāman fa naẓallu lahā ‘ākifīn(a).

They replied, “We worship idols, to which we are fully devoted.”

    Qāla hal yasma‘ūnakum iż tad‘ūn(a).

Abraham asked, “Can they hear you when you call upon them?

    Au yanfa‘ūnakum au yaḍurrūn(a).

Or can they benefit or harm you?”

Qālū bal wajadnā ābā'anā każālika yaf‘alūn(a).

They replied, “No! But we found our forefathers doing the same.”

Qāla afa ra'aitum mā kuntum ta‘budūn(a).

Abraham responded, “Have you ˹really˺ considered what you have been worshipping—

    Antum wa ābā'ukumul-aqdamūn(a).

    you and your ancestors?

Fa innahum ‘aduwwul lī illā rabbal-‘ālamīn(a).

They are ˹all˺ enemies to me, except the Lord of all worlds.

    Allażī khalaqanī fa huwa yahdīn(i).

˹He is˺ the One Who created me, and He ˹alone˺ guides me.

So We saved him and all of his family,

    Illā ‘ajūzan fil-gābirīn(a).

except an old woman, who was one of the doomed.

    Ṡumma dammarnal-ākharīn(a).

Then We utterly destroyed the rest,

    Wa amṭarnā ‘alaihim maṭarā(n), fa sā'a maṭarul-munżarīn(a).

pouring upon them a rain ˹of brimstone˺. How evil was the rain of those who had been warned!

    Każżaba aṣḥābul-aikatil-mursalīn(a).

The residents of the Forest rejected the messengers

Iż qāla lahum syu‘aibun alā tattaqūn(a).

when Shu’aib said to them, “Will you not fear ˹Allah˺?

    Innī lakum rasūlun amīn(un).

I am truly a trustworthy messenger to you.

    Fattaqullāha wa aṭī‘ūn(i).

So fear Allah, and obey me.

Wa mā as'alukum ‘alaihi min ajrin in ajriya illā ‘alā rabbil-‘ālamīn(a).

I do not ask you for any reward for this ˹message˺. My reward is only from the Lord of all worlds.

    Auful-kaila wa lā takūnū minal-mukhsirīn(a).

Give full measure, and cause no loss ˹to others˺.

    Wazinū bil-qisṭāsil-mustaqīm(i).

    Weigh with an even balance,

    Wa lā tabkhasun-nāsa asy-yā'ahum wa lā ta‘ṡau fil-arḍi mufsidīn(a).

and do not defraud people of their property. Nor go about spreading corruption in the land.

    Wattaqul-lażī khalaqakum wal-jibillatal-awwalīn(a).

And fear the One Who created you and ˹all˺ earlier peoples.”

    Qālū innamā anta minal-musaḥḥarīn(a).

They replied, “You are simply bewitched!

Wa mā anta illā basyarum miṡlunā wa in naẓunnuka laminal-kāżibīn(a).

Also, you are only a human being like us, and we think you are indeed a liar.

Fa asqiṭ ‘alainā kisafam minas-samā'i in kunta minaṣ-ṣādiqīn(a).

So cause ˹deadly˺ pieces of the sky to fall upon us, if what you say is true.”

    Qāla rabbī a‘lamu bimā ta‘malūn(a).

Shu’aib responded, “My Lord knows best whatever you do.”

Fa każżabūhu fa akhażahum ‘ażābu yaumiẓ-ẓullah(ti), innahū kāna ‘ażāba yaumin ‘aẓīm(in).

So they rejected him, and ˹so˺ were overtaken by the torment of the day of the ˹deadly˺ cloud. That was really a torment of a tremendous day.

    Wa innahū latanzīlu rabbil-‘ālamīn(a).

This is certainly a revelation from the Lord of all worlds,

    Nazala bihir rūḥul-amīn(u).

which the trustworthy spirit ˹Gabriel˺ brought down

    ‘Alā qalbika litakūna minal-munżirīn(a).

into your heart ˹O Prophet˺—so that you may be one of the warners—

    Bilisānin ‘arabiyyim mubīn(in).

    in a clear Arabic tongue.

    Wa innahū lafī zuburil-awwalīn(a).

And it has indeed been ˹foretold˺ in the Scriptures of those before.

Awalam yakul lahum āyatan ay ya‘lamahū ‘ulamā'u banī isrā'īl(a).

Was it not sufficient proof for the deniers that it has been recognized by the knowledgeable among the Children of Israel?

    Wa lau nazzalnāhū ‘alā ba‘ḍil-a‘jamīn(a).

Had We revealed it to a non-Arab,

Fa qara'ahū ‘alaihim mā kānū bihī mu'minīn(a).

who would then recite it to the deniers ˹in fluent Arabic˺, still they would not have believed in it!

    Każālika salaknāhu fī qulūbil-mujrimīn(a).

This is how We allow denial ˹to steep˺ into the hearts of the wicked.

    Lā yu'minūna bihī ḥattā yarawul-‘ażābal-alīm(a).

They will not believe in it until they see the painful punishment,

Fa ya'tiyahum bagtataw wa hum lā yasy‘urūn(a).

which will take them by surprise when they least expect ˹it˺.

    Fa yaqūlū hal naḥnu munẓarūn(a).

Then they will cry, “Can we be allowed more time?”

    Afa bi‘ażābinā yasta‘jilūn(a).

Do they ˹really˺ seek to hasten Our torment?

    Afa ra'aita im matta‘nāhum sinīn(a).

Imagine ˹O Prophet˺ if We allowed them enjoyment for years,

    Ṡumma jā'ahum mā kānū yū‘adūn(a).

then there came to them what they had been threatened with:

Mā agnā ‘anhum mā kānū yumatta‘ūn(a).

would that enjoyment be of any benefit to them ˹at all˺?

Wa mā ahlaknā min qaryatin illā lahā munżirūn(a).

We have never destroyed a society without warners

    Żikrā, wa mā kunnā ẓālimīn(a).

to remind ˹them˺, for We would never wrong ˹anyone˺.

    Wa mā tanazzalat bihisy-syayāṭīn(u).

It was not the devils who brought this ˹Quran˺ down:

Wa mā yambagī lahum wa mā yastaṭī‘ūn(a).

it is not for them ˹to do so˺, nor can they,

    Innahum ‘anis-sam‘i lama‘zūlūn(a).

for they are strictly barred from ˹even˺ overhearing ˹it˺.

Falā tad‘u ma‘allāhi ilāhan ākhara fa takūna minal-mu‘ażżabīn(a).

So do not ever call upon any other god besides Allah, or you will be one of the punished.

    Wa anżir ‘asyīratakal-aqrabīn(a).

And warn ˹all, starting with˺ your closest relatives,

    Wakhfiḍ janāḥaka limanittaba‘aka minal-mu'minīn(a).

and be gracious to the believers who follow you.

Fa in ‘aṣauka faqul innī barī'um mimmā ta‘malūn(a).

But if they disobey you, say, “I am certainly free of what you do.”

    Wa tawakkal ‘alal-‘azīzir-raḥīm(i).

Put your trust in the Almighty, Most Merciful,

    Allażī yarāka ḥīna taqūm(u).

Who sees you when you rise ˹for prayer at night˺,

    Wa taqallubaka fis-sājidīn(a).

as well as your movements ˹in prayer˺ along with ˹fellow˺ worshippers.

    Innahū huwas-samī‘ul-‘alīm(u).

    He ˹alone˺ is indeed the All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

    Hal unabbi'ukum ‘alā man tanazzalusy-syayāṭīn(u).

Shall I inform you of whom the devils ˹actually˺ descend upon?

    Tanazzalu ‘alā kulli affākin aṡīm(in).

They descend upon every sinful liar,

    Yulqūnas-sam‘a wa akṡaruhum kāżibūn(a).

who gives an ˹attentive˺ ear ˹to half-truths˺, mostly passing on sheer lies.

    Wasy-syu‘arā'u yattabi‘uhumul-gāwūn(a).

As for poets, they are followed ˹merely˺ by deviants.

Alam tara annahum fī kulli wādiy yahīmūn(a).

Do you not see how they rant in every field,

Wa annahum yaqūlūna mā lā yaf‘alūn(a).

only saying what they never do?

Illal-lażīna āmanū wa ‘amiluṣ-ṣāliḥāti wa żakarullāha kaṡīraw wantaṣarū mim ba‘di mā ẓulimū, wa saya‘lamul-lażīna ẓalamū ayya munqalabiy yanqalibūn(a).

Except those who believe, do good, remember Allah often, and ˹poetically˺ avenge ˹the believers˺ after being wrongfully slandered. The wrongdoers will come to know what ˹evil˺ end they will meet.
